The Kentucky Speleological Survey defines a cave as any naturally occurring void beneath the surface of the earth or within a cliff or ledge, excluding mines, that is large enough to permit an individual to enter, whether or not the entrance is naturally formed or manmade. The KSS definition of a cave also includes that a cave must have a length or depth equal to or greater than 30 feet. A feature which is wider than it is long and has a width equal to or exceeding 30 feet will be documented as a shelter. Any feature documented as less than the minimum requirements can be documented but will be listed as a karst feature in the KSS database.
